Berkeley Community and Demographic Information

The Berkeley neighborhood began, simply enough, as an alfalfa farm. In time, the farmer donated a 50-acre portion of land to the Jesuits for a college, and he sold the remaining land to a syndicate of Denver real estate investors from Kansas City. In 1892, the area was named "The Town of North Denver" and claimed 450 people as its inhabitants. The boundaries of the town followed, "West 52nd Avenue on the north, Sheridan Boulevard on the west, and the east and south boundaries stair-stepping from 38th and Sheridan to Tennyson, 44th Avenue from Tennyson to Perry, 48th Avenue from Perry to Federal and Federal to 52nd."

The Town of North Denver changed its name to "Berkeley" in 1898 only after the areas surrounding the suburb had been annexed by the city of Denver. Berkeley was officially annexed in 1902, when it was included in the state legislature's official creation of Denver as a city and county.

After the annexation, Berkeley grew and expanded under various city improvement projects. Berkeley Park was transformed from a swamp into a new pavilion and bathhouse. City improvements also included the development of Interlachen Country Club, which was later redeveloped into today's Willis Case Golf Course.

In the early part of the twentieth century, Berkeley neighborhood was known for its extensive parks, beautiful water district, and clean, fresh air. It was often a retreat for city workers who would come by street car to Elitch Gardens or Berkeley Park. Today, it's quiet by day, jazzy at night. Berkeley's tree-lined streets offer Denver real estate options not available elsewhere: Affordable, well-maintained and updated homes with quick access to I-70 and the ski areas.

The Piton Foundation provides data about the health and well-being of Denver-area communities. A portion of the Piton Foundation Berkeley Neighborhood Summary is provided below. The southern portion of Berkeley is studied separately from the portion lying north of I-25, which can be read as the Regis Neighborhood Summary.
