Boulder: Recreation as Science

Boulder is a progressive place, and has been for several decades.  The first city in Colorado to dedicate it’s economic resources to land use acquisition, the city began purchasing outlying farms as open space in the early 1960’s.  As a result, today’s residents enjoy over 45,000 acres of preserved parkland.

Today, the city addresses economic, social and environmental sustainability in an effort to maintain the community’s reputation as enjoying a legendary quality of life.  Boulder’s level of outdoor recreation has attracted many international elite runners and cyclists.  (It recently won the Gold Award for Bicycle-Friendly Communities.)  Despite it’s proximity to the Rocky Mountains and it’s integrated open space, downtown Boulder has an urban feel.  Recognized as one of America’s top cities for art, Boulder has more than 30 art galleries and a host of museums, stage theatres and cultural events, including the Colorado Shakespeare Festival and the Colorado Music Festival.

Quick Facts from the City of Boulder’s 2008 Community Report:

Population:   103,100
Number of Housing Units:    44,885
Percentage of Single Family Homes:    62%
